A Model Creator Who Has Kept Creating for 40 Years

Technology continues to evolve, but the original drive to create does not change. Over the past four decades, 3D creation has undergone an enormous transformation. From model making for film and television in the era of film, to the age of digital modeling, and now to AI-driven creative workflows, tools have continued to change and the boundaries of creation have expanded again and again. But for wotz101, his creative journey of more than 40 years has always revolved around one goal: turning the ideas in his mind into works that truly exist.

At 63, wotz101 is a 3D creator with more than 40 years of experience, a collectible-model enthusiast, and a seasoned professional in film and animation. His work includes sci-fi vehicle models, film and television character sculptures, toy reproductions and restorations, collectible-grade models, 3D-printing experiments, and more. Behind these works are decades of accumulated experience in model making, visual art, and digital technology.

For many people, retirement means the end of a professional journey. But for wotz101, retiring in 2014 was not the end of creation; it was the beginning of another chapter in his creative life.

From the Film and Television Industry to Personal Creation: Model Making Became His Way of Life

Before becoming an independent 3D creator, wotz101 built a rich career across music videos, commercials, film, television, and IMAX projects. He was also one of the original Quantel Paintbox operators before Photoshop existed. When he retired in 2014 for health reasons, he began devoting more time to his own interests: 3D creation, model making, and collecting.

Why does a 63-year-old still have such a strong desire to create? He says:“I used to work on television and the movies until 2014 when I got ill and had to retire. So this keeps me going in my old age.”

For wotz101, creation is no longer simply work; it is a way of life. Creating keeps him learning and helps him stay connected with new technologies. Whether it is hands-on making, digital modeling, or today’s AI tools, technology is simply an ever-changing form of expression for him. What remains unchanged is his passion for creation.

From $500 3D Prints to Creation for Everyone: He Has Witnessed 40 Years of Change in 3D Technology

As a creator who has followed the development of 3D technology for a long time, wotz101 experienced the high-barrier early era of 3D creation. In 2002, he used ZCorp full-color 3D-printing technology. At that time, completing a model meant:

  • Professional-grade equipment was required.
  • Complex scanning procedures were required.
  • Production costs were extremely high.

At the time, full-color printing required photogrammetry with 62 cameras, and a single print cost about $500. For ordinary creators, this kind of technology was far out of reach. Today, the development of AI and 3D printing is changing all of that.

Twenty years ago, creating a model required expensive equipment. Today, an idea and an image are enough to get started.

For creators with professional modeling skills, AI is not a replacement, but an accelerator. For people who have not learned modeling, AI provides a new path into the 3D world. wotz101 describes AI 3D tools this way:“It gives people who haven’t learned to model an outlet to create things.”At the same time:“It speeds up the process for more skilled users. So best of both worlds.”

This is how he sees technological progress: it does not reduce the value of creators; it gives more people the opportunity to express their ideas.

The Creator’s View: Technology Changes the Way We Create, but Not Creation Itself

For wotz101, the greatest value of AI is not that it replaces creators in making work. It is that it helps creators explore ideas more quickly. As a creator skilled in using ZBrush, wotz101 is not someone who cannot model. On the contrary, he sees Hi3D as a new creative tool: AI helps him quickly explore more possibilities, while professional experience is responsible for the final refinement. He believes:“Technology should expand creativity, not replace creators.”
As he puts it:“What I like about Hi3D is that it helps me generate very good base models.”

Hi3D provides a reliable starting point for his creative process, enabling him to bring ideas to life quickly from zero to one, then refine them further with other tools based on his own needs. This workflow helps him move more efficiently from concept to a polished final piece while maintaining full creative control throughout.

He is full of anticipation for the future:

“I really think this will be a big future in 3D animation and 3D printing and games.”

Creation Never Retires; It Only Enters a New Era

Forty years ago, wotz101 created works through hands-on methods and traditional model-making techniques. Later, he witnessed digital modeling and 3D printing transform the industry. Today, he has embraced the AI era and continues to create with new tools. Technology continues to change, but creators always remain at the center of creation. For the next generation of creators, things that once required professional equipment, complex skills, and large amounts of time are now becoming more accessible.

And for creators like wotz101, AI is not the end. It is a new beginning that allows creation to continue.

Creation never retires.
